They will share research, tools, and stories that will expose those who interact with immigrant.
Uncle Sam Wants You As educators we are aware that an institution of higher education is not the path of choice for every individual. Multiculturalism
The Game of Life Diversity is crucial to a holistic individual both academically and professional. We each are equipped with different types of personalities and each life experience is representational of how we live and interact with others. Throughout the course of this session, participants will engage in various activities and conversations relating to the impact of individuals in small subcultures and how our lifestyles ultimately affect the overall interrelatedness of the world.
“You’re So Articulate”: Politically Correct Leadership This session offers diversity training and support for professional and community leaders who provide services for individuals of diverse backgrounds (disadvantaged, immigrant and refugee families, teachers of nontraditional adult students, etc.) seeking to acculturate into American society. Acculturation theory stipulates that there are various degrees of identification for both groups, inclusive of integration, marginality, assimilation, and separation. The facilitator will lead a discussion on the knowledge needed to aid these diverse cultures.
Global Leadership This innovative session will challenge the meaning of competent citizenship which will impact current and future generations. The facilitator will discuss the characteristics of a global leader and the need to embrace change. As one of the major global leaders amongst numerous disciplines, America does not actively engage its citizens to step outside their comfort zone to holistically understand the global economy. America fears change but with the many disparities in education, healthcare, urbanization, and socioeconomic status, it is within the best interest to better prepare individuals for the inevitable.
Shifting (How Women Of Color Exist) When seeking directional information to a particular place prospective travelers and inquisitive individuals usually elect to use a road map to determine the exact distance and least detour ridden path to their final destination. Identifying specific landmarks of interests and areas to avoid, while simultaneously offering a sense of geographical clarity to those seeking directional assistance are some noted benefits of using a road map. This setting will service as a forum where dialogue can occur between new and seasoned professional women in leadership positions on how to navigate and shift within the “old boys’” network. According to the 2008 Annual Averages provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 50.8% managerial, professional and related positions were held by women. If we were to retrieve the numbers for women of color, the numbers would be more dismal. This same data stated that of the entire labor force in America women represented the statistics by only 46.5%. The journey for women of color and white women hosts some level of social exclusion; we will investigate and discuss the similarities and differences as we seek continual change.
Working Across Cultures How high is your EQ (Emotional Quotient)? Organizations often look to cultivate the technical skills of their employees without paying much attention to those “soft skills” needed to work with others. In a multicultural, multiethnic and multigenerational workplace, how do you fit in and can you successfully work across cultures? In this workshop, participants will examine themselves as cultural beings by learning to appreciate the many cultures they participate in and acknowledging the skills and traits they possess to effectively work across cultures. Topics include: the definition of culture and cultural competency, cultural building blocks, and a look at generational and workplace culture.
